2. Detailed Meaning of Ayana

Ayana (spelled عيانة in Arabic) is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means a girl who has large eyes, and a girl who is perceptive. It is derived from the AIN-Y-N root (eyes), which is used in many places in the Quran.

Do not strain your eyes towards the worldly benefits We have bestowed on some of them, nor grieve on their account. Lower your wing of mercy for the believers (Quran 15:88)

Ayana can also be derived from another root, A-Y-N,  (spelled أيان in Arabic, this is a completely different word from the one mentioned previously)  and the meaning becomes “the time when [something happens]”, time, era, epoch. This word is often used when speaking of the Day of Judgment, for this reason it has made some people think it means “day” or “Day of Judgment.” You are free to use this meaning, or the one mentioned previously.

Ayana is also an Ethiopian name for girls that means beautiful flower.

To sum things up, Muslims can use Ayana and by it they can mean (1) “perceptive” or with large eyes [indirect Quranic name] (2) time, era, epoch [direct Quranic word], or (3) beautiful flower [non-Islamic word, but has a good meaning].

Ayana can also be another spelling of the Persian girl name Ayaneh, which means “inspiration”.
