Meaning of Liyana
Liyana is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means softness, tenderness, and delicacy. It is derived from the L-Y-N root which is used in a number of places in the Quran, such as:
42. Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not neglect My remembrance.
43. Go to Pharaoh. He has tyrannized.
44. But speak to him a soft and delicate word. Perhaps he will remember, or have some fear.” (Quran 20:42-44)

I don’t find “Liyana” in the Quranic Verse You’ve given the reference of (20:44), but the word I see there could be pronounced “Laee’yina”.
Liyana seems to be an English name to me (no matter how you spell it. Leanna, Lyana, Lianna, or other) .
How come is it a name for Muslim girls?

I was very fond to keep this name but after asking fatwa from a mawlawi he said if “a ” replaces “y” the meaning changes to curse.

Hi, my name is Emleigh Aferdita Cobaj Duka, I’m married to a man called Markas Duka. I have 3 girls and one boy! My eldest is 11 and her name is Erykah, pronounced E-r-ee-kah, my next is my son who is 9 and his name is Lukah, with his ‘h’ really strong, and my two twins Moneekah and Taylah, all my kids have h’s at the end of their names is because I find it shows the Islamic side, even though they are white girl names. (They are white with brown-gold curly hair) My little girl really wants to name her sister Liyanah, we are Albanian Muslim so our children have nearly English names! But for me and my husband, Markas, think maybe the name, Sindi,(Cindy) would suit a white girl with brown-gold hair and blue eyes. We don’t know if she’ll have his blue eyes or my green eyes. All my kids have blue except Ereekah. Liyanah might be a middle name, Ereekah’s is Norah, Lukah’s is Ilirh, Moneekah and Taylah’s are Areena and Lena.

If the name has a good meaning, isn’t that sufficient in Islam? I don’t understand some people here criticizing the author when they can simply do their own research and educate others as well. But, why educate when we can easily criticize. If the “mawlawi” said the replacement changes the meaning then the solution to that is simply not making that change. Hope we Start to appreciate knowledge and hard work of others.

Aslamualikeuim, My little sisters name! Yes some names on this website are not Arabic. Do try to do research on the names before using them!

Liyana is not an arabic word, the verse this page uses as reference in the Quran (Chapter 20: verse 44) sounds out “Layyinan” and not “Liyana”

The Albanian Muslim comment here- man you sound so racist just because someone have European features or whatever doesn’t mean you name the “European” names. All that matters with a name is good meaning. Also seconding what someone else already said- stop criticizing this name! It is beautiful. The authors clearly said it is indirectly from the root word and not directly in the Quran.

Liyana means “tender”, “delicate”, “gentle” or “soft” (from Arabic “layyin/لَيِّن”).
