Samar, pronounced similar to the English word “summer”, is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means “conversation during the nights of the desert”, “night” and “the darkness of the night”. Samar is derived from the S-M-R root which is used in the Quran in verse 23:67:

Assalamu alaikum. My only son’s name is samar. I picked the name from a quranic verse of surah Al baqara which is actually “Th’samar”. Which there literally means “a fruit of” or “a product of”… But later I found out that it’s an ancient Hindi name as well where samar means battle and represents a war commander, Samarasanga. Then in Arabic it also means an evening conversation with a background music or poem. It’s also derived from the ancient Hebrew word shamar which means to preserve. That’s all I know… And Allah knows best 🙂
