Meaning of Muhammad

Muhammad is a direct Quranic name for boys that means:

  • A person in whom praiseworthy characteristics are abundant
  • One who deserves constant praise due to their good traits
  • One who constantly receives grateful expressions of praise for their deeds.

Muhammad literally means “one who is receiving ḥamd“, from the ح م د (Ḥ-M-D) root. Ḥamd has a very specific meaning that has no exact English equivalent. It does not mean any kind of praise, which might be false praise or flattery. It refers specifically to praise given to someone who has deserved such praise by their deeds, with the person being praised in order to express thankfulness and gratitude towards them. Thus a person who receives ḥamd is being given genuine credit and gratitude for their deeds through expressions of praise.

The Arabic word for mere “praise” is the completely different word madḥ.

Muhammad is the name of Islam’s Prophet (peace be upon him). Before Islam, only seven people among the Arabs were known to have this name according to the classical Lisan al-Arab dictionary. After Islam, it became one of the world’s most popular names, if not the most popular one.

Muhammad is mentioned four times in the Quran. It is also the name of Surah 47 of the Quran.

Muhammad is only a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allah at all; but Allah will reward the grateful.” (3:144)

Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing.” (33:40)

“Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah, He will waste their deeds. And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been revealed to Muhammad, and it is the truth from their Lord, He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.” (47:1-2)

Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers – that He may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.” (48:29)
